My Review:

I’ve been a fan of Helen Rolfe’s for a long time now, enjoying many great books, wonderful characters and settings. Written in the Stars is the second book in the Skylarks series – stories based around an air ambulance team in Dorset.

I loved the first book, Come Fly With Me, so was eagerly awaiting this one and it didn’t disappoint. Whilst it was nice to catch up with the characters of the first book, this time the focus was on Bess – critical care paramedic on the  team.

Bess lost her Dad a few years ago, since then she has been living (and spending money) like each day is her last. She has got herself in quite a mess but doesn’t know what to do. Shes proud and when reality hits, she needs to find support from somewhere but isn’t quite sure where.

Gio is a friend of Bess’. He is a firefighter and is also keeping parts of his life from others; having an alcoholic mother means his childhood wasn’t great, he cannot trust her even though he does still want to. When she turns up to stay with him, he gives her one chance but is convinced she will revert to type.

Gio has a great friendship with Bess, but as both their lives start unravelling in different ways, can they help each other, and will they both acknowledge their feelings for one another after all this time Both Gio and Bess learn that they must move forwards and not let the past dictate their present, put trust in people and be willing to follow their hearts.

 A cosy, seasonal romance that has drama and heart, highly recommended.

My Review:

Already a fan of Bella Osborne books, I highly anticipated a great summer read full of escapism and romance, with a dash of humour and great characters; and that  is exactly what was delivered.

The characters are what makes the book for me, Ros – awkward, straight laced, Darla – Willing to take risks, sociable, hardworking and Cameron – charming, funny, kind to all. An eclectic bunch that compliment each other well. A special mention to Gazza the dog, what a fab name ha!

Ros’ Dad hasn’t long to live and upon overhearing he wishes she would find a boyfriend, Ros forms a plan that is the start of her ordered life becoming a little more… unplanned. Cameron agrees to be her significant other; he needs the money after all but it soon becomes clear that Cameron is more than Ros took him for. Cameron brings out things in Ros she didn’t know she had.

Darla has been a best friend to Ros, even though most people would have given up and she couldn’t be less like her. She is hiding out, taking on all the jobs she can to pay off her exes debts. When a new pet sitting job turns into more than she bargained for, can she ever get on the right side of the local, grumpy farmer.

Got to love a fake relationship storyline, especially when sparks are flying and it’s clear to see the characters are bringing out the best in one another. At the heart of the story, it’s about doing what is best for those you care about, trying to make others happy no matter what. All the characters learn something about themselves and face up to things from their past.

Romance at it’s finest. I enjoyed every moment and think it’s an ideal summer read.

My Review:

I’ve been a big fan of Eliza J Scott for a long time, her books are always centred around great characters and are heartfelt, engaging stories. This is the second book in the Micklewick Bay series, and whilst this can be read as a standalone, I do highly recommend reading the previous book – just as a wonderful read in itself. I love that these books build a community where we revisit characters on occasion and catch up on their lives.

Maggie is the central character in this book, she lives with husband Bear and she runs a successful business from home where she creates handmade teddy bears. Everything is going well; business is booming and she has very special news to share with Bea but suddenly an old, familiar face appears and old feelings start to resurface.

Maggie’s cousin, Robyn, suddenly turns up and despite not being especially welcome, soon settles into Maggie and Bears cottage. Seeming to have a strange hold over Bear, relationships start to break down; Maggie’s happy life is under threat.

Gosh this one was a rollercoaster! Whilst Maggie perhaps isn’t the most endearing character at times, what she goes through is enough to drive anyone to the brink. Her husband Bear seems like the ideal man at the start, but I have to admit how he seemed to take her cousins side on things almost immediately was annoying – his loyalty to Maggie seemed to waver so fast. He should have been stronger and on Maggie’s side no matter what. Its one thing wanting a quiet life, but I was surprised by him throughout.

A good group of girlfriends is everything though and I love how Maggie has friends with their own different quirks but that come together as a strong group to support each other no matter what.

A story full of drama, heartache, and tension as well as warmth, love and kindness.

Highly recommend this heart warming read. Take a visit to Micklewick Bay!

My Review:

As a fully fledged fan of Jo Bartlett books, I couldn’t wait to return to The Cornish Country Hospital for the second book in her latest series. Whist I am a lover of reading a series in order where possible, you could happily read this as a standalone ( I do recommend all books by Jo anyway though!)

This time we focus on Esther and how she is coping following her recent break up from (the awful) cheating Lucas. As she is Danni’s best friend we also get to see how her romance with Charlie is progressing from the first book in the series.

I love Esther’s characters, I did in book one and even more so now. She’s lucky to be near family, but doesn’t necessarily see that things are not exactly rosy there either. Caroline, Esther’s Mum, was looking forward to having a fun filled retirement with her husband, but he no longer seems bothered by her or anything she tries to do.

We also meet Joe, Danni’s brother, who sounds swoon worthy in every way. He and Esther have always got along but Esther has always fancied him, could a close friendship be in jeopardy if romance takes hold?

Fantastic, as always. I loved finding out more about each character, they have ups and downs, things aren’t smooth sailing for anyone. A traumatic event brings Esther and Joe closer together, but in her eagerness to help others Esther also puts herself at risk.

A engaging story about friendship, kindness and being there for those you love. Things are not always going to be simple but with some support you can make your way through any difficulty. It has brilliant storylines, drama, tension, romance as well as humour at times (Good old Gwen!)

I really like this new hospital setting and look forward to reading what’s next.

My Review:

As a fan of a good historical saga, especially set around war times, I was intrigued by this especially as I haven’t read anything from this author before.

I have to admit, even with as much reading as I do, and being a history fan, I had limited knowledge of the Quakers (Friends) and their ideas around war (life). I love reading a story that gives me something to learn as well as entertaining.

Clarks is such a well known name, this was also something that had grabbed my attention initially. Reading about the community it created within the workplace, and the wider area was also interesting even though the characters are fictional.

At first, I struggled with the book, I found it a little slow going but it did pick up pace as it progressed. The characters are nice and likeable. Louisa, Jeannie, and Kate become firm friends through their work despite coming from different backgrounds.

There are many strands to the storyline, and as this is the first in a series, I presume we will see how each develop over the coming books.

A historical glimpse into factory and community life at this time, it references believes and ideas at the time which may surprise readers to learn, highlighting the issues with inequalities in gender, age, religious beliefs etc.

An interesting start to this series!

My Review:

I am a fan of Helen Rolfe and have read every book, enjoyed every series, characters and setting. I have been looking forward to reading ‘The Year That Changed Us; and was as happy as ever by the fabulous story Helen has shared with us.

We meet Emma and Annalise (Lise), the best of friends, since childhood into their young adult lives. Inseparable, Emma was a safe haven for Annalise’s’ unhappy childhood, they shared all parts of their lives and promised nothing, and nobody would ever come between their special friendship. When their dream adventure goes wrong, promises cannot always be upheld, and their lives are changed forever.

Many years have passed, lives have moved on and Emma’s life is again turned upside down by the arrival of Annalise. Emotions are high, feelings of hurt, anger and betrayal cannot be easily overcome, if at all, but could there be a way for these two women who shared so much?

Well... incredible. I loved it from start to finish.

Interesting and likeable characters, Emma and Annalise are very different; their personalities, upbringing, and families; yet their bond is clearly very special. I found myself on Emma’s side at first, I liked Annalise but found my loyalty sticking with Emma. She has the comfortable childhood, surrounded by her very loving family whereas Annalise had money but parents that didn’t seem to care that much. Emma’s family became Annalise’s – which only serves to make the pain of her actions later hurt even more for Emma. Emma has clearly been through so much, loss, pain and heartache. Annalise’s life wasn’t what she envisioned; her choices had consequences, but she is back wanting to change things if she can. I was rooting for the characters to find some way to reunite. Neither character is perfect, both have flaws and have made mistakes; both have hurt the other in some way. There is no right or wrong in the situation, that’s perhaps what makes this story so engaging, how people can be blind to see their own errors, not face up to what they did wrong because of how much hurt they feel.

Brilliant writing from this wonderful author, I think this book really stands out amongst the others I’ve read by her.

A story about the power of friendship, the bonds that bind people and the chance to discover if they are ever fully broken or could there be some way back.  

A story with conflict, heartache, and drama yet an important message of the importance friendships and forgiveness.

Excellent read, highly recommended.

My Review:

I’ve been a huge fan of this series from the beginning, a wonderful setting, a great cast of characters, storylines that have taken us on emotional journeys for each of the midwives. Although I hate to say goodbye to any series, I can have hope they may appear one day in the future in some way shape or form, I feel we’ve become friends and I should like to know how they are doing from time to time.

Happy Ever After…the ultimate ending for all, but I can honestly say there were times reading this I was not altogether sure that would be possible. As always, emotional twists and turns along the way, our lovely Jess, who we have seen endure so much, takes one of the central roles this time and we learn what more Jess must face. Times to make your heart ache but also moments that fill it with pure joy. I love Jess’ character, she is inspirational in how she continues to support so many others when she herself is in pain.

When an opportunity presents itself, Jess is worried at first, is she able to take risk in order to get what she has always wanted, even if it may end up breaking her heart just a little more.

We also have Megs story, which is very surprising. She is put through the ringer too, it’s very emotional and difficult times for her but with every dark cloud comes some sunshine, and after a big shock, Meg comes to the realisation that she cannot be the one to solve every issue and that her priorities must change.

I loved our final visit to the to midwives, I love Jo’s writing and I look forward to whats to come. Happily Ever After for the Cornish Midwives is a great read, I highly recommend, but I do suggest reading the others first – it’s worth it!

My Review:

Another smashing read from Eliza J Scott and her Life on the Moors series. As always it’s a story full of warmth, character and love.A feel good story that gives you a cosy warm feeling all the way through. 

 

Amongst characters we have already met and taken to heart, we have Brogan who is restarting her veterinary nurse career and new vet Nick. When they meet on their first days, both realise where they have met before and all can see the sparks flying. 

When situations, drama and moors life throw the pairing together, it’s easy to see their relationship is full of spark but can both allow themselves to follow their hearts. 

 

When the village comes under threat and loved ones are affected, Brogan and Nick become closer than ever. Fate plays it’s hand throughout this winter filled treat, a story of love, friendships and connections but also in allowing people close and taking a chance. 

 

Written as part of a series but easily read as a standalone book, the sense of community is what I love about these books. A gorgeous story in a brilliant setting. Highly recommended!
