Just Date and See - Portia MacIntosh

Billie is looking forward to a quiet, man-free Christmas. It’s just a shame her family doesn't feel the same way…

With a house full of unexpected (and unwanted) guests, Billie needs to find the perfect escape to get away from the chaos.

So when her dating app recommends a week of singles nights in her area, Billie decides that braving these events has to be better than making conversation with her dad’s new wife, dealing with her mum's mid-life crisis or witnessing her sister flirting with her insufferably arrogant next-door neighbour.

While this is definitely not the festive season she had planned, between disco bowling and boozy bingo, little does Billie know that she may find love this year after all - she'll just have to date and see...

Fall in love with the perfect laugh-out-loud festive read from top 10 bestseller Portia MacIntosh.

My Review:

As a big fan of Portia’s books, Just Date and See did not let me down. It was highly entertaining, funny, interesting and a eclectic mix of characters; some you love, some you instantly dislike.

Main character Billie is looking forward to a calm, man-free Christmas, looking forward to some peace and quiet in her house over the festive period. Poor Billie has no chance! As her house fills up with (un)invited guests (each with various bad habits) her dream of that Christmas slowly turns into a nightmare.

To escape Billie takes drastic action by signing up to every singles event she can. Meeting another like-minded soul, she is soon having fun and adventures of her own. But are things too good to be true? What secrets are being kept and why?

I loved It from start to finish. I loved Billies character and really felt for her, she is taking advantage of by just about everyone in her life. Luckily she has support in the unlikeliest of places.

Another hit that is perfect reading this upcoming festive season.

Janet Jackson’s Yorkshire B&B - Becky Papworth

Yorkshire lass and dental receptionist Janet Jackson has just taken a big risk. Using all her savings, she’s turned her spacious garage into a Bed and Breakfast, slapped a sign on it and without any experience at all, is now awaiting her very first guests.

With a moody teenage daughter and a crazy sister to contend with she’s already got her work cut out. The trouble she soon discovers, is that guests have undesirable habits, annoying pets and endless demands. ‘Is it bloody worth it?’ she asks herself a dozen times a day. Janet gradually learns her trade - but not without being tested to her limits. The question is: will she come through the experience with her bank balance, cottage and her sanity intact?

Hugely entertaining but a word of warning: if ever you’ve thought of running a B&B, read this hilarious debut novel first– you might want to think again!

My Review:

A refreshing, quirky book that kept me thoroughly entertained. I really didn’t know what to expect next! Fun and light-hearted reading at its best.

When Janet decides to open her ‘Annex’ as a B&B she really doesn’t know what she has let herself in for, especially when she is surrounded by people who demand quite a bit of her time and energy! Us readers are almost like her confidantes and it’s like she is confiding her inner most thoughts to us in a chatty, friend like way.

With each new booking Janet learns something new, but we also get to see how her relationships change, how her family has it’s ups and downs and how she survives and thrives.

It is funny and full of humour but it does have a warmth that is pretty unique. Janet seems just like your run of the mill woman, trying her best in every area of her life – yes she sometimes gets it wrong but she has every good intention. She is such a likeable character, surrounded by a whole host of characters who each bring their own unique voice.

It’s brilliant and I highly recommend; well written, moves along nicely and is easy to pick up and enjoy.

Dreams Come True at Glendale Hall - Victoria Walters

Lorna is following her dreams. But can she follow her heart?

Lorna Ferguson has dreamt of opening her own bed and breakfast in the village of Glendale for as long as she'd pictured falling in love. While her love life remains frankly hopeless, Lorna is determined to secure Dove House - the home she imagined living in as a child - to start this new venture with her family.

Along with brother Adam, Lorna starts restoring the house to its Art Deco glory, but faced with a whole host of renovation problems and their money fast running out, they worry that Dove House will never be ready to open in the New Year.

When a mystery man turns up, needing to fulfil a promise he made to his dying father and find the object he left at Dove House many years ago, Lorna's heart goes out to him. But what they find there is going to change both of their lives forever.

Facing problems at every turn, and distracted by her heart, Lorna is going to need all the magic that her beloved Glendale can supply to make all her dreams come true..

My Review:

I have been looking forward to a return to Glendale, seems an age since the last book but this was definitely worth the wait. Back to a wonderful setting with familiar characters and a chance to catch up with their lives. We do focus on Lorna, although she had appeared before, this book is the chance to really get to know her and the rest of her family.

I enjoyed getting to learn about Lorna’s dreams, her aspirations to open her own B&B but also having the perfect location in mind that has sentimental reasons. Her relationship with her brother (who shares the dream to open the B&B) is great to read and they balance each other out well. It’s a great family, with the slight exception of their older sister who isn’t always as positive as Lorna would like her to be.

When fate and opportunity aligns, the time is right for them to take a leap and follow their dream. But.. even when dreams come true, things don’t go smoothly and both have to learn to take risks – with the B&B but also their hearts.

I love Victoria’s writing, cosy and familiar so as soon I started the first page, I felt content and happy just to snuggle up and savour every word.

A fantastic return to Glendale, a story of following your heart, understanding the past and learning to move forwards, believing in yourself but allowing other people in to help.

Dreams can come true, it may not be a smooth ride and you made have to have a whole lot of faith as well as determination but with those you love and care for around you, you can achieve all you want.

I cannot recommend anything by Victoria enough but this is a great Autumn read.

My Review:

I thoroughly enjoy a cosy mystery (even ones full of recipes) and this definitely entertained me, although it took me a few chapters to settle into it, especially with so many characters to get my head around. Set in Australia, we meet Ruth and Doris who suddenly find themselves in the middle of a 'situation' and get stuck in solving this murder mystery. Amateur sleuths at their best!

A pair of fab leading characters, mouthwatering recipes and descriptions of food, you better have a snack or two handy! A good plot with fun characters led to this keeping me invested all the way, I was desperate to know everything and almost wanted to race through to find out. I love to see if I can figure it all out, but I didn’t quite manage it this time.

I have never read anything from this author but I am now a fan and will look to be reading more. The first in a series, I shall look forward to more sleuthing, A must read for mystery fans!

My Review:

Another great book from the brilliant Eliza J Scott. Sunny Skies and Summer Kisses is a wonderful read from start to finish – I was hooked instantly and couldn’t put it down.

I’ve read each of Eliza J. Scott’s books and she never fails to deliver a heart warming tale, relatable characters and charming settings. Her writing is easy to follow, the storylines being played out at a good pace that is neither rushed, nor drawn out.

Anouska’s story is at the heart of this book, we learn  of the damage her Mum leaving at an early age has done on her relationships now whilst seeing her discover ways to move forward. She is a great character, even if at times frustrating because you can see what she needs to do to help herself. At the start you discover her in an awful relationship with a man that made my skin crawl. Surrounded by great friends and family is just the support Nouska needs to follow her dreams, and even her heart.

A great story with ups, downs and all the in between – drama, tears, romance, heartache and learning to trust in yourself and others.

I highly recommend to all, any book of Eliza’s is a real treat.

Author Bio: Eliza lives in the North Yorkshire countryside with her family. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found with her nose in a book/glued to her kindle or working in her garden, fighting a losing battle against the weeds.

Christmas at the Borrow a Bookshop - Kiley Dunbar

'Tis the season for finding love… and the perfect book

With just two weeks until Christmas, everything in Clove Lore should be perfect. But the latest holidaymaker to the Borrow a Bookshop is feeling far from festive…

Icelandic ex-bookseller Magnús Sturluson might be surrounded by love stories in the Bookshop, but he’s nursing a sadness that not even fiction can fix.

When Alexandra Robinson finds herself stranded in Clove Lore, she finds a safe place to hide from heartbreak. After all, all that’s waiting for her at home is a cheater boyfriend and the memories of her parents. As Alex finds herself embraced by the quirky village community, she finds her tough exterior thawing – and as she grows closer to Magnús, she finds an equally soft heart under his gruff shell.

It seems that Clove Lore is working its magic once again – until a great flood on Christmas Eve brings devastation in its wake. It’s up to Magnús and Alex to batten down the hatches and help bring the village back together again, while also introducing the locals to the Icelandic tradition of the jólabókaflóð – Yule book flood – where families and friends gather on Christmas Eve to exchange books and read together.

But can Magnús and Alex truly rescue the ruins of the village, and salvage their Christmas spirit? Or is there another complication lurking even closer than they thought?

My Review:

The second visit to a series with a premise every book lover dreams of – being able to run their own book shop. After reading The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday by Kiley last year, I was excited to return and especially at Christmas.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first book, this can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend you do read The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday too. Magnus comes into the community we got to know and love, he is an extraordinary character and it wasn’t his idea to come; he soon meets another new member of the community – Alex, who has her own reasons for being around. Their connection is instant but events unfold that mean things do not run smoothly, and when stormy times hit damage is done to more than just local shops and homes.

Clove Lore, it’s locals and the community feel is so special, not matter the set back they pull together to make things work. Magnus and Alex are welcomed with open arms and the village works its magic yet again.

I think the best thing about this book is the whole cast of characters, the community feel and that friendship and camaraderie is a main feature. These books are so well written, you feel like you are there amongst them all. The story moves along nicely, we learn more about so many of the characters in this book.

I am looking forward to seeing what comes next! I wish I could be whisked away to take over the bookshop for my very own holiday.

Purchase Link - https://amzn.to/3tTzPjm

My Review:

I can’t believe we are here…. At the end! I’m so sad, I love this series, the characters and community that has been created by the wonderful Jessica Redland.

I implore you, read this series (in order if the best but all work as standalones)!

As always, this instalment is jam packed, drama, upset, highs and lows. There is never a dull moment and just because it is the last book in the series the fun has definitely not stopped.

Sam’s story is interspersed with more about Fizz, a character we know but only now learn more about and wow, what a story. It can be difficult to read at times but well written and I was safe in the knowledge Fizz was surrounded by great people in Sam and the Hedgehog Hollow family.

I won’t say too much about what happens in our final visit, but how great to read how far Sam has come and what she has achieved, how they have homed more than just hedgehogs and to see every relationship that has changed, developed, or improved.

A fantastic story to tie loose ends together.

Although we have had moments of heartache, trauma and upset, it has always balanced with love, kindness, and compassion. I will truly miss this series but look forward to what Jessica Redland brings us next.

Thank you for a wonderful series Jessica, I hope for glimpses into the lives of our favourites in the future.

Let It Snow - Beth Moran

When your heart's broken, all roads lead home...

After the end of a long-term relationship, local weather girl Bea Armstrong has been avoiding her family, and their inevitable ‘I-told-you-sos.’ But with Christmas fast approaching, she is finally on her way home to Charis House, the school in Sherwood Forest that her mum and dad run in their old family home. And to top it all off, the insufferable Henry Fairfax – who her parents have always wanted her to marry – has also been invited.

Relief comes in the shape of a last minute interview for her dream job. There are just a few minor problems… The interview is in Scotland, Bea has no car, and the snow is falling already. The only solution is for Henry to drive her – could this Christmas get any worse…

But during an unforgettable two day interview, a stay in a log cabin and a nightmare journey through the snow, Henry turns out to be nothing like she thought.  And when Bea’s first love and recent ex shows up, Bea has a difficult choice to make…

Purchase Link - https://amzn.to/39tHspS

My Review:

A light hearted, fun and festive read that will entertain in many ways. I must admit, that living close to Sherwood Forest myself added to my interest as it I could really place myself in the setting. I even loved the Mansfield mention too!

We meet weather girl (fanatic) Bea Armstrong who is wanting to make her own way in the world and within her career whilst also determining who her heart belongs too – a long time love who consistently let her down or a surprising someone who has been in front of her all along.

Going home for Christmas is a family holiday nightmare for Bea, it has been planned like a military operation for reasons unknown to Bea, but she risks her mother’s wrath as whilst she wants to be with family an opportunity arises she cannot miss. Heading off for the interview of a lifetime with an unlikely ally, Bea soon discovers the parts of herself she’d long forgotten and following many incidents, she realises where her passion, and talent, lies.

A wide variety of characters that are funny and quirky in their own way, I enjoyed getting to know more about them all.

Cosy and cute, a perfect read this Christmas time.

Coming Home to Puddleduck Farm - Della Galton

When your heart's broken, all roads lead home...

London City Vet, Phoebe Dashwood, finds her partner Hugh and their boss in a passionate clinch beneath the mistletoe at their works Christmas party.

Heartbroken, she bolts to the New Forest, her childhood home to regroup and soul search.

Being home gives Phoebe the chance to reconnect with friends and family and especially with her fiercely independent gran, widower Maggie Crowther, owner of Puddleduck Farm, and makeshift animal shelter New Forest Neddies.

Deciding not to return to London, Phoebe hunts for work locally, hoping she can also help Maggie, who’s clearly swamped and not coping. But will Maggie accept Phoebe’s help?

Her quest is hampered by stubborn grandmothers, meddling mums, an attractive childhood friend, a real-life Lord, a remorseful ex, and a best friend who’s determined to play matchmaker.

Can Phoebe find happiness professionally and personally in the place she calls home, surrounded by those she loves or does fate have other plans for Phoebe?

Purchase Link - https://amzn.to/3QrYXaq

My Review:

A charming read, especially for animal and romance fans. It was great to read the first in a new series by Della Galton, and a new setting in the scenic New Forest. Puddleduck Farm is run by Phoebe’s Grandmother (Maggie) and is a rescue for a wide range of animals, who each have their own personalities and quirks. Phoebe notices a change in Maggie and starts to worry that things are not going well and that her grandmother may be overdoing things.

Phoebe is back after a heartbreak and I enjoyed getting to know her, understand her way of thinking and meet the people she has in her life, hopefully characters we will be in the future. We see the friendships she can rely on, the potential for romance – even in surprising places - and I thought it was interesting how the character wasn’t rushed into a new romance for the sake of it, much better to see how the character settles to such big life upheavals and that she wants to focus on herself.

There is a lot happening within this book, including many themes that are being carefully woven into one story but this is done well by the author. I enjoyed the animal antics and will look forward to hearing more about some of the characters. A must read for many, I highly recommend.
