The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens -

The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens

The perfect cosy and uplifting romance to curl up with this winter!

In Mistletoe Gardens a legend exists: anyone who kisses underneath the mistletoe will be guaranteed another year of love…

When local baker Essie Browne discovers that Mistletoe Gardens is to be demolished in January, she’s determined to save the place she loves so much. So Essie proposes building a life size gingerbread house to bring in the crowds…just how hard can it be?

Well, quite hard actually. Essie can bake gingerbread blindfolded, but she hasn’t got a clue how to build an actual house with it! She needs help - and fast!

Enter local builder, Joss Hallissey. Essie is convinced that with Joss’s help they can pull this off. There’s just one tiny problem: Joss hates Christmas, gingerbread, and… well, just about everything else too.

Joss the Grinch makes it clear that her idea is ludicrous and pointless, but he reluctantly agrees to help with her plan.

Will the gingerbread house be enough to save Mistletoe Gardens? Or will Essie's chance for a magical kiss under the mistletoe be lost forever?

Perfect for fans of Holly Martin, Kat French and Caroline Roberts!

My Review:

As a long time fan of Jaimie Admans’ I was anticipating a charming, heart warming story with sweet characters, wonderful, enchanting locations and a sprinkling of magic, of course I was not disappointed.

A festive story that filled me with that cosy, warm feeling, where my heart was full and fuzzy with love and festive spirit. A story of hope, determination, a resolve to make changes and also to find the best of everyone and of course, to embrace tradition and celebrate love.

Essie, local baker extraordinaire, loves where she lives, the people, the place and has vowed to never leave. Mistletoe Gardens is a special place to all who live there and when to discover upcoming plans to demolish this much-loved place she sets her sights on making a stand, saving Mistletoe Gardens. Her plan, outrageously, is to build a life size gingerbread house, but whilst she can bake, she has no idea on how to build and needs help.

Joss hates Christmas, and pretty much most things. He wants to be away from the place that holds painful memories and definitely has no real intention on getting involved in anything community spirited. He has a few loose ends to finish up and then he plans to go.

My first “festive” read of the season and I think it will take a lot to top this one. I adored it, felt like I was there with Essie in Mistletoe Gardens. She is a spirited young lady and knows what she wants, lacking in the ability to speak up for herself after being hurt in the past. Mistletoe Gardens sounds like such a festive, special place – I’d love to take a trip there myself.

With a cast of very unique characters, you will laugh, you will feel emotional but you will remember that magical feel we can forget as we get older. This story will reignite that sense of wonder and will have you ready for the season! Fantastic read that will be a favourite!

The Woman in my Home - Diana Wilkinson

It was all meant to be so easy. Payback with a difference.

I’d stay in Ballyholme, Northern Ireland, to decide whether to forgive my cheating husband, Ryan. Ciara, my new best friend, would stay in our London home, free of charge, until I made up my mind.

The ruse certainly had its plus points: Ciara’s unexpected appearance would freak Ryan out, and my disappearance should make him regret his roving eye.

But now I learn Ciara has evidence … evidence that my husband has committed murder. And she’s no longer answering my texts and calls. Is it some sort of blackmail plot? More worrying, if Ryan is indeed a killer, could he strike again?

Purchase Link - https://mybook.to/womanhomesocial

My Review:

A twisted story of revenge, plotting to get exactly what you want and doing whatever it takes, or going wherever needed, to put your plans into action.

Full of suspense and intrigue, I was keen to read on and get to the end, finding out what happened to certain characters that fully deserved whatever came their way. I have to admit there are no characters I absolutely loved, even Flo wasn’t my cup of tea really. I wasn’t convinced about some of the things she did or the relationships she forged. Her connection with Ciara’s brother was interesting, I was expecting more from his character by the end as well.

Some twists and turns along the way but nothing that completely surprised me, I could work out what was going to happen and that’s ok, I enjoyed it. Sometimes too many red herrings/plot twists can be off putting. I liked that this went where I hoped it would.

This was an entertaining read, paced and well written. I would definitely recommend.

My Review:

I love the Heritage Cove series of books and ‘Finding Happiness At Heritage View’ (the fifth book in the series) is a smasher. I just couldn’t put it down I was enjoying it so much.

Not matter how long since the last visit to the Cove, it doesn’t take long to feel the sense of community as you read, catching up with characters you love and stories you have read. That being said, you could read this as a standalone, there is a enough backstory information included – but I do highly recommend the other books, they are simply brilliant.

Fantastic writing, great storylines and realistic, loveable characters – Helen Rolfe has genuinely created one of the nicest fictional communities. If only we could go and visit for real. I suppose I will have to be happy with our fictional jaunts with each book – please Helen don’t break our hearts and say there’s no more!

Hazel is a great character but she has her own demons, at first we don’t understand what they are, we slowly learn to understand the problem and hope that she can find the support and help she needs before it’s too late.

New vet, Gus, and his daughter Abigail are very welcome additions to the local community as is their horse. They have both been through so much and a fresh start may just help them move forward.

Hazel needs a boost to her confidence and recognises the in Abigail; the relationship they develop is very sweet and it benefits both as the book progresses.

Gus’ priority if his daughter and wanting to make life as easy for her as possible. He develops a friendship with Hazel but struggles to understand why she stops herself getting too close. There is definitely a spark between the two of them but can something become romantic if they are both needing to get over their own issues.

Absolutely adored the setting of the stables and getting to hear about the different horses. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new characters, catching up with old friends and spending more time in The Cove; I’m already looking forward to the next visit!

I cannot recommend this book enough, perfect for a hot summers day.

The One - Claire Frost

THREE PERFECT MONTHS

TWO IMPERFECT PEOPLE

ONE BIG LOVE STORY

What happens when you lose the love of your life just three months after you meet him?

Lottie Brown has finally found The One. Leo is everything she’s ever wanted – he’s handsome, kind, funny and totally gets her. Three months into their relationship, Lottie is in love and happier than ever before.

But then Leo tragically dies, and Lottie is left floundering.

As she struggles to stop her life falling apart, Lottie learns more about the man she thought she knew, and starts to question whether Leo really was as perfect as he seemed…

The brand-new heart-breaking novel of love, loss and learning to live again, from the acclaimed author of MARRIED AT FIRST SWIPE. Perfect for fans of Paige Toon, Holly Miller and Rosie Walsh.

‘A tender tearjerker’ HEAT – THE EMOTIONAL ONE

‘This moreish book will break your heart then fill it with love and hope’ FABULOUS

My Review:

A heart-breaking tale of loss, grief and putting the pieces of a life not quite lived together again.

This book bits hard in your emotions, you can feel the raw pain felt by Lottie and how she gets lost in the loss of Leo but the ultimate loss of what could have been.

She finally finds the man of her dreams, after years of seeing her sisters lives come together and already being let down by a man she loved, but that happiness is short lived.

I won't say more about the plot but this is a story of rediscovering life, living it for you and not others. You see how to appreciate what you have and not to compare yourself to others.

I liked Lottie, I empathised with her. I know loss and grief, I've experienced losing the one you love. My heart broke for her as I understood. I empathised but I was equally willing her to move forward, see what she did have and what she was capable of. She makes mistakes and sometimes her attitude stinks. I loved the bond between her and her sisters, a really lovely touch. Closer than friends and that means being able to be absolutely honest and know, deep down, they will always be there.

I read through this is no time; I didn't anticipate massive twists and turns, but I got a powerful and emotive story full of heart and soul.

Thank you Team BATC and Claire Frost for the opportunity to read and take part on the blog tour.

The Beach Reads Book Club - Kathryn Freeman

Welcome to the Beach Reads Book Club…where love is just a page away…

When Lottie Watt is unceremoniously booted out of her uptight book club for not following the rules, she decides to throw the rulebook out the window and start her own club – one where conversation, gin and cake take precedent over actually having read the book!

The Beach Reads Book Club soon finds a home for its meetings at Books by the Bay, a charming bookshop and café owned by gorgeous, brooding Matthew Steele, and as the book club picks heat up, so too does the attraction between Matt and Lottie.

If there’s anything Lottie has learned from the romances she’s been reading, it’s that the greatest loves are the ones hardest earned.

A love letter to chicklit, romance, romcoms, whatever you want to call them!

My Review:

For book lovers and readers of all kinds, here we have a dream book – a wonderful romantic tale that really does celebrate books, book clubs and genres that do not get the true recognition they deserve.

I loved the book club in this book and wish I could be part of it; I also enjoyed the fact they talked about books and authors I love.

Lottie is a girl with gumption, and I think she’s absolutely brill. Bored of the stuffy book club lead by the seemingly miserable and stuffy Eve, she decides to start her own. Returning a book to the local book shop, she meets the new owner and slowly but surely a plan is formed!

Such a lovely compliment of characters, the book club members form a great friendship and that is a key part of the story – how much they help and support each other in difficult circumstances.

Matt is the new owner of the book shop, determined to keep his family together following a loss, he has his work cut out to make everyone happy. He is smart, well mannered, and not exactly in his comfort zone. Matt has built up his defences, but I knew from the start Lottie could be the one to break them down.

A lovely romance, their budding friendship and relationship grew on me the more I read. Is it predictable and cute? Yes – nothing wrong with that at all. Isn’t that the point of the book club anyway…

It’s well written, funny and entertaining (Audrey is so funny!) but it has a little drama; nothing ever runs smoothly does it!

Highly recommended for book fans and romance lovers. Perfect summer read!

Both of You - Adele Parks

Leigh Fletcher: happily married stepmum to two gorgeous boys goes missing on Monday. Her husband Mark says he knows nothing of her whereabouts. She simply went to work and just never came home. Their family is shattered.

Kai Janssen: married to wealthy Dutch businessman, Daan, vanishes the same week. Kai left their luxurious penthouse and glamourous world without a backward glance. She seemingly evaporated into thin air. Daan is distraught.

DC Clements knows that people disappear all the time – far too frequently. Most run away from things, some run towards, others are taken but find their way back. A sad few never return. These two women are from very different worlds, their disappearances are unlikely to be connected. And yet, at a gut level, the DC believes they are.

How could these women walk away from their families, husbands and homes willingly? Clements is determined to unearth the truth, no matter how shocking and devastating it may be.

My Review:

I want to rave all about this incredible book, to do so I have to be very careful about how much I say. I do not want to give away any vital clues or spoilers because the intrigue adds to the anticipation and thrilling climax.

Adele Parks is one of my ‘go to’ authors. Never failing to have me on the edge of my seat and fully immersed in the world she creates. I think this is possibly my favourite of hers (hard to choose when they are all so good though isn’t it!)

There are subtle references to the start of the pandemic (the story is set at that time) but they are delicately and cleverly interweaved although have no bearing on the story itself. I didn’t mind it one bit, in fact I was quite impressed and thought it added some interesting context to how the characters were acting/having to behave etc.

I was quite surprised by the plot twists in Both of You, happily so although I had vague ideas about what was happening and who was involved, the clues are there. Red herrings along the way may provide some interesting misdirection though, and credible culprits.

I couldn’t put this down; I was hooked after the first few chapters. Seeing events unfold from different viewpoints created an interest in all characters, and a growing dislike for surprising people.

Early surprises and clever twists will leave you excited and invested; you’ll need to give yourself plenty of time to devour this thrilling read. Another smasher from Adele Parks.

Q&A with Juliet Greenwood

Welcome to The Comfy Chair Blog... Juliet Greenwood

Juliet Greenwood has always been fascinated both by her Celtic heritage and the history of the women in her family. Her great-grandmother supported her family by nail making in Lye, in the Black Country, and her grandmother worked as a cook in a large country house.

After graduating in English from Lancaster University and Kings College, London, Juliet worked on a variety of jobs to support her ambition to be a full-time writer. These ranged from running a craft stall at Covent Garden to workshops in story-telling, along with spells of teaching and charity fundraising, and more recently as a freelance editor and proofreader.

Juliet now lives in a traditional quarryman’s cottage between the mountains and the sea in beautiful Snowdonia, North Wales, and is to be found dog walking in all weathers, always with a camera to hand. Her second book for Orion ‘The Girl with the Silver Clasp’ will be published in September 2021.

1.      What was your favourite childhood book/author?

I adored Rosemary Sutcliff, and her historical novels like ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’ and ‘The Shield Ring’. I loved the way the stories took me away to another time and place and made me really feel what it was like to live there, along with an element of adventure that took me right away from school and everyday life.

2.      What inspired you to start writing and how long has it taken you to get to this point?

I was such a bookworm as a child, I soon started to make up my own stories. I can clearly remember writing my first novel aged ten, a historical epic set in Saxon times. My ambition was always to be a writer, but I failed miserably in my first attempt when I was in my twenties.  That was when I discovered that just reading and studying literature isn’t enough to be able to write a book, you need to have lived a bit of life too! So life, earning a living and all the rest took over, and it was just over fifteen years ago that I decided it was now or never and seriously go for it. Since then, I’ve gradually built up my experience, from magazine stories to being published with a small press, and I finally managed to get an agent and a two-book deal with Orion last year. I’m really thankful for that experience. There are so many skills to be learnt for writing a novel, as well as all the practical publishing aspects like dealing with the various edits and publicity, I was so glad I was (fairly!) confident I knew what I was doing when I started working with Orion. It’s been quite a journey!

3.      Describe your writing space - neat and ordered or creative chaos?

I live in a traditional quarryman’s cottage on a hillside at the edge of a Welsh village in Snowdonia. My office is in the ‘crog’ loft, a small space in the attic where the children would have slept in Victorian times. I’m lucky that a previous owner put in a window, so I have a view over my garden and towards Anglesey, with amazing sunsets. Because it’s so tiny I try to keep it fairly organised. It starts that way when I begin a new book, but by the end it’s tending towards my natural penchant for creative chaos, when discarded notes are strewn on every surface for my cat to sit on and all the coffee cups somehow disappear. It used to be my totally private space (the stairs are as steep as the original ladder), but now I have to keep some kind of order for zoom calls, so one corner retains some semblance of neatness – I just have to remember not to adjust the computer so anything else can be seen!

4.      What is the easiest and hardest part of the writing process?

I find the easiest is the first draft. Mine are always like rough sketches for a painting, just blocking out the story and are always utterly and embarrassingly dire, but the good thing is it doesn’t matter. I go right the way through without stopping, even if a character changes sex or a new one appears out of nowhere. The pressure is off because it’s the version no one will ever see and anything can happen and nothing about it is fixed. I find the hardest part is the editing, the bit when you bash that original brilliant idea (which by now feels like the worst in the world) into shape. It might be the hardest, but this is the part I love, especially when it gets towards the end and I start getting input from my editor. It’s such a buzz when the amorphousness of the first draft takes shape and all the niggles are banished, and finally a book appears. It’s a long, meticulous and exhausting process, but also hugely satisfying. And chocolate is obligatory, naturally.

5.      What does literary success “look” like to you?

When I see readers have enjoyed my books! And when I can feel that I am growing as a writer with the new book, as well as stretching myself in new directions, trying to be the best I can be. My ultimate aim is to become a full-time writer and make my living from what I love doing best – that looks like the best literary success to me!

6.      How do you select the names of your characters?

I make sure they fit in with the period – and the period in which they were born, of course (easy to forget). Then the most important thing is to make sure they can’t be confused with each other, which is mainly making sure they don’t have the same first letter or sound too similar. So I make lists of the letters I haven’t used and go back through my lists again. Some characters appear with a name that’s just perfect, which is wonderful – even when it means I have to change the others around again!

7.      What do you hope your readers take away from your book?

I love Hester, the heroine of ‘The Ferryman’s Daughter’, my first book for Orion. She is fiercely protective of her family, but also utterly determined to follow her dream, despite the constraints of her time and the arrival of WW1 that changes her world forever. Hester was largely inspired by the history of women that, until recently, has been largely forgotten, or seen as irrelevant. All those amazing women who were inventors, artists, mountain climbers, nurses under fire and spies behind the front line in WW1, as well as those who kept the world turning at home whatever life threw at them, and became business woman and career women when marriage was no longer an option, so creating the opportunities we have today. Hester was also inspired by the determination of my own grandmother and great-grandmother to escape poverty and take control of their lives. She is a hugely positive and resilient character - I hope my readers are cheering her on all the way, just as I was. I unexpectedly found her an inspiration myself, when the pandemic appeared just as the book was in its final stages. Whenever I had a wobble, I had the strongest sense of not wanting to let Hester down. Whatever life throws at her, Hester picks herself up, dusts herself down and carries on, more determined than ever. It’s a female trait that should definitely be celebrated.

Lastly, Jenn (The Comfy Chair) likes to enjoy a good read snuggled up with a cup of tea and piece of cake... what cake or sweet treat would you suggest to accompany your book?

It has to be a slice of the exquisite apple cake made by Hester, who is a passionate cook. The recipe is included at the back of the book and comes from a friend, who has a magical way with flavours. It has a touch of lemon running through and is the best apple cake I’ve ever tasted. Especially when accompanied by clotted cream, of course!

The Ferryman's Daughter

1908: Hester always loved her mother best, her father had always been a hard man to like, spending more time (and money) in the local than with his family. After her mother's sudden death, followed by an injury forcing her father to give up his job as the ferryman, Hester is placed in the position of care-giver for her young brother and sister.

As the years pass Hester must row the ferry night and day to keep them all from starvation, while her hopes of working in a kitchen and one day becoming a cook, slip further and further away.

But just how far is Hester willing to go to make her dream a reality? And as the threat of war comes ever closer to the Cornish coast, will it bring opportunities or despair for Hester and her family?

The Cottage of Curiosities - Celia Anderson

Return to 59 Memory Lane with a new novel from the Kindle Top Ten bestselling author Celia Anderson!

’A brilliantly original and enchanting tale’ Sun ‘Wonderful characters make this a great read’ Good Housekeeping ‘Truly unique…unforgettable’ Woman’s Weekly

Grace Clarke is shocked to learn at the age of fifty-six that she’s adopted – it feels as though her whole life has been a lie. But it also explains a lot of things for Grace too. Including the gift that has plagued Grace since childhood – the ability to feel other people’s memories.

Could this gift be something she shared with the woman who abandoned her – the mysterious May Rosevere?

And as Grace travels to the small coastal village of Pengelly to find the answers she craves, she feels her gift growing stronger. As though May is somehow calling her long-lost daughter home…

My Review:

Having read and adored 59 Memory Lane I could not wait for this return to Pengally. I do think if you haven’t read 59 Memory Lane you should read it first (a) because its wonderful and b) it will give some clarity to this story.

Celia Anderson is brilliant; her writing is gorgeous and the way she tells these stories, brings her characters to life is wonderful. I feel so involved with these stories it takes me days to be able to move on with another book. Ultimate book hangover!

With ‘The Cottage of Curiosities’ we have a lovely tale of self discovery, love, hope and acceptance. Friendships and relationships play such important roles within this story.
We meet Grace who is searching for information on her biological parents, and finds herself heading to the coastal village of Pengelly. Here she effortlessly fits into the community, making friends as she uncovers the truth about where she came from. All of that on top of managing and utilising an extremely special, maybe magical, skill to help those she gets close to.

An absolutely heart-warming and uplifting book, a real curl up, get cosy kind of read. I cannot recommend this enough. One of my favourites of the year.

The Minute I Saw You - Paige Toon

The brand new novel from the Sunday Times bestselling author Paige Toon. The perfect summer read for 2020!

Some people believe that it’s possible to fall in love simply by gazing into another person’s eyes . . .

When Hannah and Sonny meet, a spark ignites that is hard to ignore and impossible to forget. Weeks later, their paths cross again, but Sonny appears distant and reluctant to meet Hannah’s eye. It soon transpires that Sonny is at a crossroads. He’s committed to making serious life changes – ones that can’t and won’t include romance.

Hannah has her own reasons for wanting to keep their budding friendship platonic. Plus, she’s only in town temporarily, housesitting for her uncle. But as the summer hots up and the chemistry between them intensifies, Hannah and Sonny discover that there’s more to each other than meets the eye...

My Review

Breathtakingly heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Paige Toon just melts my heart every single time. I absolutely adored this latest release from Paige. 'The Minute I Saw You,' had me from the very first word, I couldn't put it down - not that I even wanted to!

I enjoyed the bubbling chemistry between Hannah and Sonny, from the moment they met it was clear there was something special between them and that made their second meeting all the more surprising as something had fundamentally changed.

Both characters have led lives that would set them apart from others, both are hurt, living with scars from traumas that are very different. Hannah and Sonny are struggling with their own secrets but feel so drawn to one another. The blossoming friendship is a joy to behold.

I enjoyed watching Hannah and Sonny get close, seeing their friendship grow and evolve throughout (without them realising how close they were actually getting). I loved the rest of the additional characters – Bertie for one will having you laughing but Matilda and Archie will prove extra special too.

I don't want to talk about the story too much, it is so special that I want you to discover Hannah and Sonny's history for yourself. I will say my heart broke a little, the secrets and surprised were not what I expected. I think we all try to guess what may happen, or what the dramatic twist may be and I hadn't predicted this at all, well not completely.

I love that Paige doesn't shy away from things, takes something so unique and creates a beautiful story that is empathetic yet enjoyable. She writes with such delicate care and consideration.

The Minute I Saw You is a very poignant love story. It was funny, romantic, frustrating but essentially very moving. Every aspect is written sensitively and ensured I loved both Hannah and Sonny equally.

I cannot recommend it enough. Paige Toon never fails to deliver an absolute beauty of a book.
