Sunshine After the Rain

Melanie knows she’s been running away…

For the last seven years Mel has been hiding; from life, from her friends and from those who love her the most - her family. But maybe there really is no place like home?

When Mel returns to Willowdale for a family event, she has no intention of staying. But surrounded by her family she begins to realise just how much she's been missing and also, how much healing she still needs to do.

Starting a dream job at Willowdale Hall, going on walks with Emma and her funny alpacas and reconnecting with those she loves, Mel slowly begins to see chinks of light and a more hopeful and happier future ahead.

And as Mel begins to feel stronger, she also feels brave enough to face the most painful part of leaving home…the one man she has always loved. With his help, can she finally banish the dark clouds forever and see the sunshine after the rain?

My Review:

Jessica Redland’s Sunshine After the Rain is a heartwarming addition to her Escape to the Lakes series. It is a gentle exploration of healing, family, and rediscovery. As always this story has the picturesque and special backdrop of the Lake District, we meet Mel who as she returns to her hometown of Willowdale after a seven-year absence, confronting past sorrows and embracing new beginnings.

Redland’s storytelling always captivates me as a reader, every book has drawn me in, made me love the characters and the community created. The wonderful depiction of Willowdale and its endearing locals make me wish I could be part of that world – get me to that quiz night!  Mel’s journey—from grief to hope—is portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity, making her both believable and inspiring. I was rooting for her from that start, hoping that she would find her way again. As it is the next in a series it was lovely to catch up with past characters and storylines, you could read this as a standalone but it’s lovely to know what’s happened in more detail. Loved the inclusion of  alpaca walks and catching up with how previous romances were blossoming.

Well written and paced carefully to replicate Mel’s slow and steady change, I feel nothing was rushed and that just added emotionally to key moments throughout. Overall, Sunshine After the Rain is a comforting read that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the power of returning home and being around those who know us best. The book is emotional, heart-breaking and warming at the same time.  Fans of Redland’s previous works will appreciate this uplifting tale that reminds us of the sunshine that can follow even the darkest storms.

My Review:

The third book in a wonderful series by Jessica Redland, this is a poignant, heartwarming story about following your heart, saying goodbye and embracing new beginnings. I adored Joel and Poppy’s story, both are wonderful characters  which is a common trait of Jessica’s - creating characters we feel connected to and want the best for!

We’ve previously met Joel in previous stories but now he is front and centre, deservedly so, I’ve been looking forward to know more about him. He’s so used to being seen as second best, a great guy but not THE guy. His daughter is his world and his ex seems to do all she can to limit their time together.

Poppy, what a character – I felt so emotional for her, having had so much to deal with losing her Mum but then having to be strong as her Dads health declined. Life hasn’t gone the way she thought it would and at best, she’s struggling to move forward in any way. It soon becomes clear she needs a break, and ends up discovering the perfect place, the perfect person and the perfect time away to see what she needs to do next.

I love when characters have chemistry that sparks from the page, Joel and Poppy do instantly. Not only was romance inevitable but it seemed each person found their best friend; a person who was completely on their side and willing to do whatever it took to make the other happy. A fast moving relationship but a clearly strong connection.

As always, there are ups and downs, misunderstandings and other people throwing spanners in the works; both have so much going on in their lives do they have the time for each other.

Jessica handles sensitive topics so sensitively, yet again highlighting issues and topics amongst the romantic, cosy element we all love. I highly recommend this one (and every one by the author!)

Always sad when a series comes to an end, but a gorgeous book to end on. I always look forward to the next book from Jessica.

My Review:

Any Jessica Redland book is a must read for me, one of my “go to” authors. I couldn’t wait to get stuck in to ‘ A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge’ and it didn’t disappoint.

There is a lot to this story but I felt everything was tackled sensitively and was relevant to what the characters were going through, individually and when becoming romantically involved.

As a fan of the hedgehog series, I knew I would learn some interesting snippets about Owls, I enjoyed that element of the book. I also found out more about gymnastics that I thought I would, Snowy’s passion for this jumped off the page.

As we have already been in this neck of the woods and are aware of Zara, it had the feel of catching up old friends. It was lovely to be back at Bumblebee Farm too and discover how lives have progressed. This being said, you can read this book as a standalone.

Zara is such a likeable character, she struggles to believe she is good enough – her Mum seems to prefer her brother at every opportunity. The positive relationship she has with her Stepdad is nice to read, knowing she had someone she felt she could rely on.

Snowy was a complex character, clearly hiding from the world and suffering. He wants the best for his family, even if that means keeping everything to themselves. Zara and Snowy have an instant spark, and the gentle way they gain each other’s trust, respect and understanding leads to an amazing bond. She helps him move forwards in so many ways whilst also building her own self-esteem and repairing difficult relationships.

This story includes significant and emotional topics relating to death, grief, mental health and alcoholism, but has been written in a respectful and sensitive way. Another heartfelt, emotional story from Jessica Redland but one that does have many moments of joy, humour and of course, romance.

Another highly recommended read; great writing, likeable characters and interesting themes.

Thanks to all for the advance copy to read and review.

My Review:

I love a Jessica Redland series and so have been really looking forward to A Breath of Fresh Air; the second in the Escape to the Lakes series. Having been blown away by the first book and Autumns story, I was keen to see how Rosies story would work out.

Autumn had escaped to the Lake District to meet her long time penpal, and best friend, Rosie. We had already discovered quite a lot about her and her Mum, but this time the focus being on them means we learn so much more. Although it is the second book in the series you could read this as a standalone, you do catch up with Autumn and what is happening with her (I would highly recommend reading The Start of Something Wonderful though).

Rosie lives with her Mum Alice, is the manager of the local riding stable on the estate where she grew up. She has been happy until recently – worrying about her Mum who is too afraid to leave the grounds of the Estate following an accident years ago, fearing she would remain single forever as well as questioning who her father was. With so much uncertainty and worry in her life she is wary when a familiar face from her past is now very much part of the present.

I love the characters Jessica creates; they are believable and feel like friends who you want the best for. I emphasised with Rosie, her frustration and worry and understood why she guarded herself against further hurt. Alice was a frustration for me, I really do like her and sympathised with the trauma she had been through I just wished she’d try and get some help for herself. There are characters you are definitely not meant to like, especially as we discover some heart breaking truths.

Another excellent read, honestly I can’t praise Jessica Redland enough for constantly bringing us books with great settings, wonderful storylines and engaging characters.

A Breath of Fresh Air is just that for readers. A book to thoroughly enjoy, full of emotion, hope and heart. Already looking forward to the next book.

My Review:

Firstly, I have to say how much I adore all of Jessica Redlands books, no matter which series, setting or characters; her writing always captures me. I was so excited to be back in Castle Street and loved the idea of a cat café! After this book I definitely want to visit one.

At many points it appears that Tabby may not get to open her much longed for cat café, she faces adversity from all angles – crazed ex-girlfriends, animal activists, an ex who let her down as well as a body that leaves her in so much pain she cannot function no matter how much she wishes she could. Hard to read but incredible to learn more about a condition I’d only ever heard of and didn’t realise the extent to which it can debilitate a person. Luckily for Tabby she has a wonderful community around her, family, friends and fellow business owners.

I adored hearing about the different cats, just picturing their antics adding some light relief and cute moments. Part of why I love Jessica’s books is for the sense of community that is developed; how people come together to help and support each other – always makes me wish I could join them!

There are moments of pain and sadness but it’s overwhelming a story about acceptance, perseverance, recognising that you can ask for help and that nothing needs to hold you back when following your dreams. Of course, we have romance and at first it threw me, I didn’t expect it but I soon realised the pairing was completely right.

Festive spirit, cute cats and romance; a fabulous read.

My Review:

Jessica Redland is one of my “go to” authors, I have loved every book, every series, all the characters and locations, so I was really looking forward to getting stuck into another series in a brand new setting!

This new series, set in the Lake District, has started strong, I loved getting to meet new characters, fell in love with the locations (as always Jessica describes it wonderfully) and couldn’t put it down once I started!

Autumn is our leading lady, but we also get to know Dane, Rosie and Alice well too. Beatrix Potter has clearly been an influence as this book is littered with references to her life and work; which is something Autumn and Dane bond over. As you read more about Beatrix, her story is mirrored in some ways by Autumns – it’s hard not to draw comparisons.

As an Illustrator, the Lakes give Autumn inspiration but she feels something is missing, Dane is also looking for some creative inspiration and so the pair agree to help each other.

Rosie has been Autumns penpal for a very long time, having her nearby has only helped strengthen their friendship. We were given tiny glimpses into her life, but I feel (and hope) there will be more to learn about Rosie.

It’s a story with ups and downs; long lost love, poor timings, heartbreak and pain but also hope, a fresh start and new chances.

Autumn is a lovely character and I hoped her time in the Lake Distract would be the start of great things for her. I’ve never been to the Lake District but I felt like I could easily imagine the village, the walks etc.

Great start to the series, I cannot wait for the next book!

My Review:

Summer Nights at the Starfish Café is the third and final book in the Starfish Café Series and what a way to go. This whole series has been brilliant – drama, emotion, ups and downs; a host of great characters (and not so great of course) but at the root of it is love, determination, over coming adversity and being surrounded by the best people. This third book sums this all up nicely, with old faces making a not so welcome return, heartbreak and strength playing a massive part in every characters story in some way.

Emotional rollercoaster doesn’t really do this one justice; prepare yourselves and get hankies ready. Hollie and Jake have been through so much, individually and together, happy endings, wedded bliss and a rosy future for book three? Well…. Not quite, not right away at least. I won’t say more but these guys are made of tough stuff.

Kerry and her brood are in for some surprises, a blast of the past returns to seek something they believe they should have and this reveals a whole history that causes pain and anguish. I think Kerry is amazing in this situation though, classy and putting those she loves most first every time. A dramatic rollercoaster tinged with healing hearts, new starts and interesting developments.

I didn’t think I would be so ok with this series ending but feel this book really did them all justice, I liked the cameos from Castle Street friends and love that there is always that nod to previous stories in other series.  I will miss them all and wish I could go visit though – for goodies and seals if nothing else.

Great writing as always by Jessica Redland, a go to author for great settings and loveable characters.

Looking forward to what is coming next!

My Review:

A new book by Jessica Redland? COUNT ME IN! As a fan of her books I couldn’t wait to meet some fantastic new characters but was thrilled at a sneaky cameo from some old favourites too!

Typical of any book by Jessica Redland, this story pulled me in, dented my heart a little but fully restored it by the end. A full range of emotions, lots of ups and downs within this tale of looking for love and following your heart. With some great, lovable characters and some who are just downright awful, there’s a mixture of heart warming romance, comedy moments, along with sadness and righting old wrongs.

Barney is such a great character, lovable, true to himself  and getting to know him better was a joy. Fans of Hedgehog Hollow may recognise him as the brother of Fizz. Looking for love on a TV show isn’t what you’d typically expect of a farmer and this doesn’t end up being your typical dating show.

Amber is TV producer extraordinaire, who is confident and takes no fools.Having to work with people who have caused trouble in the past is a challenge, but one she takes on. Her chemistry with Barney is instant but she wants to concentrate on finding him love with a contestant that is more his type.

A charming story, full of heart and emotion, everything I have come to expect from a Jessica Redland book. I couldn’t put it down and think for fans, it’ll be like picking up a favourite, cosy blanket. For readers new to Jessica, you have a glorious selection of books to discover after this!

Highly recommended!

My Review:

I can’t believe we are here…. At the end! I’m so sad, I love this series, the characters and community that has been created by the wonderful Jessica Redland.

I implore you, read this series (in order if the best but all work as standalones)!

As always, this instalment is jam packed, drama, upset, highs and lows. There is never a dull moment and just because it is the last book in the series the fun has definitely not stopped.

Sam’s story is interspersed with more about Fizz, a character we know but only now learn more about and wow, what a story. It can be difficult to read at times but well written and I was safe in the knowledge Fizz was surrounded by great people in Sam and the Hedgehog Hollow family.

I won’t say too much about what happens in our final visit, but how great to read how far Sam has come and what she has achieved, how they have homed more than just hedgehogs and to see every relationship that has changed, developed, or improved.

A fantastic story to tie loose ends together.

Although we have had moments of heartache, trauma and upset, it has always balanced with love, kindness, and compassion. I will truly miss this series but look forward to what Jessica Redland brings us next.

Thank you for a wonderful series Jessica, I hope for glimpses into the lives of our favourites in the future.
