Escape to the countryside with a heart-warming new novel from Katie Ginger, author of Snowflakes at Mistletoe Cottage.

Amelia loves her life in Paris. But with the surprise inheritance of her childhood home, Meadow Farmhouse, she has no choice but to return to the small village of Meadowbank to restore her great-aunt’s old farmhouse. However returning to Meadowbank means she has to confront her past, including old flame Adam.

When Amelia discovers a locket hidden in the farmhouse, containing the picture of a mysterious World War Two soldier, she starts to uncover the secrets of her great-aunt’s past and is drawn further into village life. Shocked by the warm welcome from the villagers and her own surprising feelings for first love Adam, Amelia is suddenly confused as to where she truly belongs.

Can Amelia finally confront her own past and find where her heart truly calls home?

My Review:
Looking for a perfect country escape in book form? This is it! Beautiful, scenic location, with kind caring characters who add to the small village like charm. With mystery, intrigue and rediscovering yourself at the heart of this story, I can’t tell you how much I adored this.

I was absolutely enthralled from the start; I didn’t want to put it down for a second. Having read books by Katie before, I was expecting a wonderful storyline and a character I would really take a shine to and she didn’t disappoint.

Amelia hasn’t returned to Meadow Farmhouse for quite some time; and the death of her Great Aunt Vera means she is now the owner. Leaving her home in Paris, Amelia plans on sorting out the bits and pieces before selling it on…to her this isn’t home, just somewhere she grew up. But returning starts to reveal secrets that Amelia had no idea about, soon she’s keen to find answers. Returning to Meadow Farmhouse also means confronting someone from her past, her former love, Adam. Unsure of his reaction or how she may feel, could it be possible she’d manage to avoid him completely.

As she confronts the ghosts of her past, the more she starts to feel that she has come home and maybe it is somewhere she could belong.

Amelia is a lovely character, she is determined, strong willed but has had a difficult upbringing. She feels like she doesn’t belong, and it takes a journey for her to realise the friends she had aren’t the genuine kind and she has to forgive the mistakes people make when they are hurting themselves. She learns that home is always where your heart is.

Warm and cosy, leaving you happy and satisfied – an ideal book for shutting out the world.

Q&A with Katie Ginger

Welcome to The Comfy Chair Blog... Katie Ginger

KATIE GINGER lives by the sea in the south-east of England, and apart from holidays to very hot places where you can sit by a pool and drink cocktails as big as your head, she wouldn’t really want to be anywhere else. Winter Wishes at Swallowtail Bay is her sixth novel. She is also the author of Spring Tides at Swallowtail Bay, Summer Strawberries at Swallowtail Bay, Snowflakes at Mistletoe Cottage and the Seafront series – The Little Theatre on the Seafront, shortlisted for the Katie Fforde Debut Novel of the Year award, and Summer Season on the Seafront.

When she’s not writing, Katie spends her time with her husband and two kids, and their dogs: Wotsit, the King Charles spaniel, and Skips, the three-legged rescue dog. (And yes, they are both named after crisps!)

1.      What was your favourite childhood book/author?

My favourite childhood book is Winnie the Pooh and the House at Pooh Corner. I’ve got an absolutely ancient copy in my bookshelf that no one’s allowed to touch because it’s falling apart!

2.      What inspired you to start writing and how long has it taken you to get to this point?

Although I was one of those kids who loved writing, I stopped for ages when I started working and had kids. Even though my ambition was secretly to be a writer, life got in the way and I just thought it was one of those things that would never happen. But then in 2014, I got made redundant and I decided that after years of being practical, I wanted to tap back into being creative, so I signed up for a novel writing course and fell back in love with writing.

I joined an online writing group too which taught me so much, and I found out I was okay at it! It gave me a real confidence boost.

Sadly, in 2017 my cousin died from cancer at just 25 and it was the wake-up call I needed to really try and make my dream of being a writer come true. I entered a Twitter pitch that HQ Digital were running and was lucky enough to get picked up.

3.      Describe your writing space - neat and ordered or creative chaos?

Definitely neat and ordered! Most of my house is a mess but I love a tidy workspace! It just makes me feel more in control and gives my brain room to be creative.

4.      What is the easiest and hardest part of the writing process?

I think the easiest is having the idea and the hardest is writing that first draft. Editing can feel tough emotionally because you’re changing things you put a lot of effort into, but knowing it will be better at the end of it always gets me though!

5.      Which other authors are you influenced by?

So many! Sometimes I read other authors books and just wish I could write like that! I particularly love Sophia Money-Coutts, Jenny Colgan and Wendy Holden.

6.      What does literary success “look” like to you?

That’s a really good question! I think just knowing people are buying my books and enjoying them. I love it when readers get in touch or when I see someone has read my book, it really means the world to me. They’ve chosen to spend time with my characters and read my words and that blows my mind every single time!

7.      How do you select the names of your characters?

For my heroines, I love old fashioned names. I’ve had a Charlotte, Esme, Hetty and a Nell. I just love them! For the guys, I sometimes go for names that remind me of an actor or character. They can be hard to choose though sometimes!

8.      Do you hide any secret ‘messages’ in your book that only a few people will understand?

Never! I’m just not clever enough for that! Sometimes I ask my friends if I can use an anecdote or something they’ve told me and they’re very kind and let me. My mum friends can probably recognise stories about our various kids!

9.      If your book was to be made into a film/TV programme, which actors would play which role?

I absolutely adore questions like this! So for Winter Wishes at Swallowtail Bay, I see Nell as Anna Farris. I just love her in What’s Your Number? For Tom it’d have to be a long-haired but clean-shaven Tom Hiddleston!

10.  What do you hope your readers take away from your book?

With how awful 2020 has been I just want readers to enjoy being away from reality for a while. I try and tug at their heart strings a bit, but it’s always safe in the knowledge that things will work out in the end! And right now, I think that’s what we all need.

Lastly, Jenn (The Comfy Chair) likes to enjoy a good read snuggled up with a cup of tea and piece of cake... what cake or sweet treat would you suggest to accompany your book?

A hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows and maybe even a flake!

My Review:

What a gorgeous festive, wintery treat. Perfect reading for cold winter days, where you snuggle down, get cosy and get lost in the adventures from Swallowtail Bay.

Nell is a sweetheart, a true romantic who I loved from the start. Her cosy, family run hotel is struggling following the arrival of a fancy, new, posh hotel. She needs go boost bookings fast to survive. She’s also a true romantic and is looking out for ‘The One,’ The answers are right in front of her but how long will it take her to realise.

Events in the community help Nell’s business start to turn around, but the niggling negative reviews are a cause for concern. How will she solve this mysterious problem and save her hotel?

I adored the relationship between Nell and Tom. What a gorgeous friendship, and in my opinion a solid foundation for romance – not that Nell would even consider it. Tom is probably my favourite character overall, what a wonderful guy. His work ethic, the fact he would go to the ends of the earth to support his friends and the sweet connection he has with his Grandad.

This is book three in the Swallowtail Bay series, I have loved each and every one and I must admit I feel a little bit sad that we won’t be back. Each can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend them all. Although I will miss this gorgeous, fictional community and its lovely inhabitants I cannot wait for more from Katie Ginger.

A heartwarming, romance with wonderful characters, seasonal cheer and festive fun. A must this winter.

My Review:

This is the second book in a gorgeous new series from Katie Ginger (who I am a big fan of). The first visit to Swallowtail Bay – ‘Spring Tides at Swallowtail Bay’ was a delight so I jumped at the chance of reading this next book, ‘Summer Strawberries at Swallowtail Bay’.

Although it does mention characters, we have grown to love from the first book, this is written so that it can be read as a standalone book.

With this trip to Swallowtail Bay, Hetty wants to reinvigorate the strawberry festival famed but comes up against an extremely reluctant Lord of the Manor. Will she make turn her plans into a success and help the failing Thornhill Manor and will her love for ex-boyfriend Ben be reignited?

This is an adorable love story that will leave you with a smile on your face and characters that have a place in your heart. The characters of Hetty and John are brilliant and the relationship they have is fantastic; she is bright, confident and does not back down easily and he needs that kind of firecracker to break down his defences.

I love books with a strong sense of community and supporting each other and this book has it in droves. The setting is so well written, I can clearly imagine the whole town as well as the Manor and from the beautiful descriptions I wish I could live there! It sounds a gorgeous place to be.

This book is an absolute charm, I laughed along, I smiled and felt every emotion for Hetty, by the end I was so happy for everyone. I read it in no time, I just didn’t want to put it down but then I was gutted to finish it and not be able to go on being part of that community anymore.

I have enjoyed everything Katie Ginger has written but this series is something very special.

My Review:

What an enchanting, captivating story! I loved every moment of this gorgeous, romantic and funny read from Katie Ginger. This is definitely one book that will fill you with festive cheer.

Katie has written a story to warm the coldest heart with well-developed characters that you will love. Esme and Joe have gone through so much that even though they get on instantly, they’ve both endured enough misery to put them off any further romantic endeavours; but sometimes feelings can not and should not be ignored.

Esme is such a nice character; I really was on her side from the off. She deserved a better go at things in London but I am so glad we saw her go back to Sandchester and her wonderful, quirky family. I LOVE her Mum and Dad – they add some very funny moments, as do her wonderful friends. I want friends like hers – always having her back no matter what.

This is beautifully written and gives us humour, love, romance, festive fun and a heart-warming tale of moving forwards and working hard to get the happy ending you deserve.  I do love the inclusion of her blog, vlog adventures etc as it felt up to date
.

Love a happy ending? Then I cannot recommend this delightful read enough.
